CHAPTER 15

Back at her new house, Sarah slid out of her sneakers. The rest of the visit with Jeanie had been delightful. Though, Sarah wasn’t sure if she’d been successful in convincing Jeanie that Don Martin wasn’t a lead suspect. But she was glad that the conversation diverted to a more positive, less personal subject right after.

Sarah went upstairs. The house was quiet, as it should’ve been, and Delgado was nowhere to be found. She couldn’t wait to finally take a hot shower and lounge the rest of the evening. Maybe she’d order a pizza.

As she approached her bedroom toward the end of the hallway, she paused. The door was open. She could’ve sworn she closed it on her way out to visit with Jeanie. She peered around the frame. No one was there and everything looked untouched and left just the way she had it. Maybe she hadn’t closed the door after all? The only other person in the house had been Delgado, but he’d had no reason to go into her room. She shook the thoughts away, chalking it up to her recent and reoccurring absentmindedness.

Trotting over to her dresser drawer, she pulled it open to find something comfortable to wear after her shower. She couldn’t wait to get the salt of the water off of her and out of her hair. In the bathroom, the fan was fixed and noticeably less audible. It wasn’t until that moment that she realized how soothing its hum was. She started the water, and under the stream, she allowed the heat to relax her neck and back muscles. She rubbed her own shoulders a bit to work out any stiffness before tackling the mess on her head—her hair. It would take several rounds of shampooing and a good conditioning to get it back to its soft, bouncy self again.

After her shower, she jumped into a comfy pair of shorts and a loose tee. Barefoot and smelling like mango coconut, she dried her hair for the second time that day. Once her hair was light and fluffy, she finally felt fresh and ready to take up the couch for some nice, quality time together with her pups for the rest of the evening. It was the first date she’d been excited for in a long time.

When she placed her comb down, the doorbell echoed through the house.

Oh for Pete’s sake, who was there now?

Sarah hurried down the steps. Pulling the door open, Sarah smirked. “Emma, you’re early.” Rugby and Winston were at her feet. Rugs had his bubblegum tongue hanging out the side of his mouth, ready to pounce. Both dogs seemed to be smiling at her.

“Mark swung by the shop and asked if I wanted to go out for dinner,” Emma said. Mark was a good-looking guy. Tall, cute, and could take on Emma’s sarcasm. He was perfect for her.

Sarah glanced over Emma’s shoulder. “Where is he?”

“Oh, he wouldn’t come.” She stepped inside and handed Sarah the dogs’ leashes. “His family is very superstitious.
